Becoming an official for sports is more than simply being enrolled in the
class, and reading the rules. Tedious work and continuous study is essential in
being a good official. In the Sports Officiating class, we read the rule books,
outline each rule, take a test on the rules, then correct someone else's paper - thus
giving us many chances to get familiar with the rules. Most state high school, and
local independent associations require a 70-80% score on their test to join the
association. However, Mr. Johnson urges the students to achieve a 90% or better
score before they are allowed to officiate that sport. Once this has happened, young
officials begin their work within the school district for pay. Below is a list of
the sports, within the district, that we currently officiate:
Once the students gain the skills they learn in the class, they may go to associations on their own, and get jobs with them. Clinics are available before each sport's season, covering the rules, mechanics, and giving the officials a chance to buy equipment/uniforms. The associations we have worked with in the past are:
An easy way to find local associations near you, is to call your city's Parks department. Mr. Murray Johnson may also be able to assist you at: (253)931-4719 ex: 1902 |
