Home of the Thunderbirds!

September 9, 2009

Dear Parents,

I want to welcome you and your family to Arthur Jacobsen Elementary School, better known as AJ, Home of the Thunderbirds!  Our school is now beginning its third year of a highly successful operation.   I feel fortunate to be able to lead and work with families and the professional staff to help educate your child.  We have an extraordinary state-of-the-art school, a dedicated, caring, professional staff, and strong educational program.  I look forward to working with you in creating an educational partnership focused on strong relationships and successful learning for all students.  Education today is a cooperative and collaborative venture. Not only does this include the AJ professional staff and students, it includes parents as well.  It will take all of us working together as we continue to strive to build an excellent program at AJ.  The professional staff and I will work hard and hold high expectations for our students, as well as for ourselves, to meet higher standards of learning.

All parents give many levels of support throughout the year that is extremely valuable to our educational program.  Your participation by getting your child ready for school with the proper materials and supplies, properly fed, dressed, and to school on time while encouraging regular attendance, lays the foundation to a great start every day.  Working closely with your child’s teacher throughout the year, attending open house, conferences, and other family/school functions shows support for your child.    Volunteers are also needed at school to make our programs work. Your time and energy will add a wonderful richness to our school.  As well, I encourage all families to join and participate in our AJ P.T.S.A.   Our active, and supportive, P.T.S.A. will do an excellent job supplementing and complementing our academic offerings and help build a cooperative climate and support for learning. As the year progresses, look for opportunities to participate in your child’s education.  I will be hosting several Volunteer Orientations with the AJ P.T.S.A.  The first is scheduled the first week in October.    Please attend if interested in helping out in our school.

To maintain A+ communication with you and keep you informed of events throughout the year, weekly news is sent from the office, classroom newsletters are published at least monthly, and PTSA news will be sent home, all of which will contain information about programs and upcoming activities.   Please read the newsletters and become involved in our school programs and activities.  Also check on the AJ Web page, which is updated monthly, at http:// www.auburn.wednet.edu/homepages/aje/

I recommend that all parents sign up for Family Access to find information you need to support your student’s success: curriculum, testing, grades, schedules, special programs, health and nutrition. Families and students have access through the Family and Student Access page to other school related information. This link requires the use of a password sent to you by the Auburn School District. If at any time you lose or forget your password or need to acquire a password, you can get this information by emailing this site: asdfamilyaccess@auburn.wednet.edu.

If you have a question about your child’s curriculum, classroom activities, or progress in school, please contact your child’s teacher by email or note and they will typically respond within 24 hours.  For more urgent matters please call the teacher.  The professional staff is dedicated to assisting you and your child. Feel free to contact me in regard to other school issues.

In addition to this letter, please visit the AJ Web page to access the 2009-2010 AJ Parent/Student Handbook which contains other important information which has been prepared to help inform and answer some of the most common questions parents have about our school.  I hope this helps you get acquainted with us.  Again, welcome to our school community and an exciting new school year!

Sincerely,

Eric S. Daniel
