Text Box: Reading
This week our class will finish up theme 2 with the story, “Rosie, A Visiting Dog”. The children have enjoyed the animal stories in this unit. We have been working on the following skills: author’s purpose, decoding long words using vowel combinations /ou/,
/ow/,/oi/, summary writing, and word relationships. One of the hardest skill we have explored has been that of singular possessive nouns. The children are learning when to use an apostrophe with /s/ to show possession.
We love to READ!
Text Box: Math
This last week the children have been very excited to begin multiplication and division. We are using a lot of groupings by 10’s, 100’s, 1000 to help us with this skill. I am also teaching the children a quick strategy to learn multiplication facts by stating multiplication problems as “ _____groups of _______” . For instance 4x5 is the same as 4 groups of 5. It really helps children learn facts quickly! We learned a fun multiplication baseball game to help us learn those facts as well!

This fall our class has already begun learning strategies to help us be successful taking the WASL test in April. You will see more and more packets coming home that connect the reading program to WASL like questions. Helping your children become familiar with the vocabulary asked on this test will help them be successful on this test.
We are continuing our work on writing concise summaries. The children are comfortable writing topic sentences and are now working to write clearly and Text Box: Accelerated

Our AR program is off and running! The children are doing a great job of reading daily, filling out report forms and taking quizzes. We have a sticker chart in Text Box: Text Box: class that helps them see how they are progressing towards their goal. Attached you will find a point update for your child towards the first quarter goals. We are doing some chapter book reading in class which helps them earn points quickly. Great Job!
