Approximately 75% of Auburn School District graduates go on to attend college, but colleges are overly full and the admissions process has become more competitive each year. Parents and high school students ask counselors what will give students an edge in the process. The counselors' advice often is that students' participation in rigorous courses such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses strengthen their college application chances. Students who are enrolled in advanced placement courses complete college-level work in high school and prepare for nationally-scored tests that may earn them college credits. Recently, the College Board named 34 Auburn School District students as AP Scholars in recognition of their high achievements on the college-level AP exams. (This large number of students realizing success on the AP tests is indicative of the wide variety of AP courses offered to them as well as the strong instruction students receive in their AP courses.)
Both Auburn High School and Auburn Riverside offer a rich variety of AP courses for students to complete college-level credits while in high school and satisfy college undergraduate requirements. Auburn Riverside High School offers 15 AP classes in 11 subjects such as biology, US history and politics, chemistry, micro-economics, and world languages, and Auburn High School offers 13 AP classes in seven subjects such as Spanish, computer science, European history, calculus, and US history. Not only do these AP courses assist high school graduates in their college admissions, but they allow students to earn advanced standing in post-secondary programs. Many colleges honor advanced placement test scores by granting credit when students enroll.
