Dear Parent/Guardian/Student:

It is that time of year as Autumn is upon us, we need to all be prepared for the possibility of inclement winter weather.  We all need to be prepared in the event of challenging weather conditions.  In addition to checking the district website, www.auburn.wednet.edu, arrangements have been made with the radio and TV stations listed below to broadcast information regarding the operation of school during snow/ice/emergency conditions.  Broadcasts begin at 5:30 a.m.  If the Auburn School District is NOT mentioned during the news broadcast, school will be open with buses operating on as normal a schedule as possible.

Most radio stations go through school announcements and updates every 15 minutes; the TV stations every 30 minutes.  Additionally, most television stations run a continuous banner across the bottom of the screen showing school schedule changes.

Should an emergency occur during the school day, students may or may not be sent home.  Depending on the type of emergency, this decision will be made with input from the appropriate agency, i.e., police, fire.  The district will provide information regarding these decisions through the radio and TV emergency information system.

HOME EMERGENCY PLAN:

Each family should have a plan covering what to do when children arrive home early due to an emergency situation.

  • What is the best route home if your student cannot be delivered to the normal bus stop?
  • Where would they go if you are not at home?
  • Who would care for him or her until you arrived?
  • Is there someone your student could call to receive help?
THE ANNOUNCEMENTS THE STATIONS WILL USE ARE AS FOLLOWS:

"CLOSED" or "SCHOOLS CLOSED"
This means that NO schools in the Auburn School District will be in session for that day ONLY.  This also means there will be no "Out of District" transportation.

"LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION"
This means that part or all of some routes will not be covered.  Please review the district map (click here).  On the map, the district has several red highlighted roads.  If your regular bus stop is highlighted, that means your road will not be traveled and your student needs to go to the nearest ALTERNATE bus stop.  Alternate bus stops are marked in yellow.

"ONE (1) HOUR LATE"
This means that buses will try to operate on all normal routes, but pick-up schedules will be one (1) hour later than normal.  Classes will begin one (1) hour later than normal.  Classes will dismiss at the normal time unless otherwise announced.  When school begins one (1) hour late, the following classes and/or programs will be affected:

  • On-site daycare will run one (1) hour late; and
  • Lunches will be served.

"TWO (2) HOURS LATE"
This means that buses will try to operate on all normal routes, but pick-up schedules will be two (2) hours later than normal.  Classes will begin two (2) hours later than normal.  Classes will dismiss at normal time unless otherwise announced.  When schools begin two (2) hours late, the following classes and/or programs will be affected:

  • No preschool;
  • No kindergarten;
  • On-site daycare will run two (2) hours late; and
  • Lunches will be served.

PLEASE NOTE:
Buses will start their routes on schedule, but road and traffic conditions may impede progress so the bus may become late as the morning continues.  Please do not call the transportation department for school closure information.
You may call the following numbers for information (253) 931-4900, 4901, 4914, 4915, 4917, 4932, and 4933.

Thank you for your assistance in helping all of our students enjoy a safe trip to and from school.

Sincerely,
Linda Cowan - Superintendent
