On Friday, April 1, students from the jewelry departments at Auburn High School and Auburn Riverside High School competed in Passing the Torch, the annual Washington State jewelry competition for high school metalsmiths.

Channing, took home the grand prize for her piece, “Beyond Sight,” a
sterling silver necklace with six detailed opening lockets and several
intricate stone settings. She estimated that the necklace took her over 100
hours to complete, much of it on her own time. Cabrina is a senior and plans
to pursue jewelry design as her career.
Auburn High School senior, Krystyna Jack, brought home second place with her unique belt buckle entitled, “Jack’s Sparrow.” The belt buckle has an etched sparrow on the outside and when opened, the buckle reveals a copper flame design. |

Auburn Riverside sophomore, Joanie McManus, took third place for her robot brooch entitled, “Number 3021.” It is a sterling silver robot that has two locket openings, one on the body and the other on the head. When opened, the body compartment reveals a copper heart inside.
Wendy Woldenberg, Auburn Riverside High School jewelry instructor, was awarded “Outstanding Jewelry Teacher” for the State of Washington.
Four students from each high school in the state were invited to participate in the contest, and 53 students took the challenge. Jewelry students from Spokane to Seattle mailed their jewelry in to the contest site, Gallery One, in Ellensburg.
