Lake View Elementary School Team Wins First Place at
King County Library Systems Global Reading Challenge
| On Friday, April 1, a team of fourth and fifth graders
from Lake View Elementary School, representing Auburn School District, won First
Place at the King County Library Systems Global Reading Challenge. The
other three competing school districts were Highline, Bellevue, and Shoreline.
The county-level competition was held in the King County Library System Issaquah
Service Center. To participate at the championship, the Lake View team won
the regional South King County Library Systems Global Reading Challenge held at
their school in March. Jan Millgard, Lake View Elementary School librarian, was responsible for organizing the initial Lake View reading event and was the coach for the team that represented the school district at the regional and county events. This reading challenge event encourages reading in the elementary grades. In the late 1930s, its predecessor, the Battle of the Books, was a weekly radio show that used a quiz bowl format to test children's knowledge of good literature. Questions about characters, plots, and settings were answered by teams representing several elementary schools. |

Team member Isabella Romero said that going to the different schools, winning, and knowing that the other teams wanted to win as badly as you did, was fun.
Team member Alexandra Bonwell said, "It was really fun because I love to read and the books were really good. There are some really good teams."
Drew Sleezer said, "It was really fun because you have to have a lot of team work." "It is also very competitive."
