Auburn School District Announces
"Whole Foods Day"
On April 27, Auburn School District’s Child Nutrition Services will host a “Whole Foods Day” in district elementary schools. The cafeteria will serve a whole foods based menu to complement the department’s ongoing efforts in providing healthy and nutritious foods to children’s diets. The featured entrée is oven roasted chicken quarter (brushed with olive oil and lightly sprinkled with kosher salt and black pepper), served with a side dish of brown rice baked with saucy beans. Lunch also includes low-fat or non-fat milk, and a trip through the always available fresh fruit and vegetable salad bar. Students can enjoy this great lunch for only two dollars.
Children and adults receive benefits from eating whole foods—foods that are consumed in a similar state to how they exist in nature. Although many foods can be part of a healthy diet in moderate amounts, Child Nutrition Services is working to increase awareness and consumption of eating foods in their more natural state. For example, when children eat whole grain bread instead of white bread, they are eating the bran from the grain, which provides fibers helpful in preventing obesity and certain cancers, and in managing diabetes. When they eat white bread, they are not consuming these grains because the grains are removed in the refining processes.
