Student Newspaper In View
Wins Best In Show Award at National Journalism Competition
Auburn Mountainview High School’s student newspaper In View received a Best of Show award for 10th place in a competition of more than 300 high schools at the Journalism Education Association (JEA)/National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) National High School Journalism Convention in Denver, Colorado, April 11-15.
Four AMHS students, sophomore Lauren Katsel and juniors Megan Harris, Mackenzie Helgerson and Chelsea Schneider, attended the convention. AMHS language arts teacher and In View adviser Stephanie Keagle also attended. At the convention, participants attended numerous education sessions, workshops and seminars relating to newspaper publication and production, student press rights, and ethics and media issues in general. Students had the opportunity to network with other high school students from around the country, as well as other advisers and media professionals.
In addition to educational sessions, AMHS students attended a breakfast with media professionals and a students-only newspaper “swap shop” where they exchanged newspapers and participated in a roundtable discussion. They also sat down with a newspaper professional to have In View critiqued and participated in an individual write-off competition. At the write-off competition, junior Mackenzie Helgerson won a personal award in excellence for her feature writing, and junior Megan Harris won a personal award for excellence in editorial cartooning.
Students also had the opportunity to explore different parts of the city, including the Denver Art Museum, the downtown area, the Lodo district, the 16th Street Mall, Coors Field and MTV’s Real World Denver house.
