Auburn Rotary Selects Auburn High
Senior as
Student of the Month for April
On April 18, Kendle Nelson, a senior at Auburn High School, was honored as the Auburn Rotary’s student of the month for April. She attended the recognition luncheon with adviser Jennifer Widrig-Hodges and her parents, Steven and Becky Nelson.
Kendle Nelson excels in most everything she tackles. She holds a 3.97 GPA, is a member and treasurer of the National Honor Society, and enjoys challenging herself in AP courses such as European History and Calculus. Kendle plays the oboe and English horn, and during her sophomore and junior years she participated in the American Sign Language club.
Recently Kendle organized a school supply drive for Pioneer Elementary School. She set up a donations table outside the local Wal-Mart and collected everything from crayons to folders to help children at Pioneer.
Kendle grew up in Auburn and has attended all 13 years in the district—Lake View Elementary, then Cascade Middle School and then Auburn High to be exact. When asked about her biggest accomplishment, Kendle chimes in, “I have perfect attendance at school since kindergarten, so I am looking forward to officially making it to 13 years in June.” Kendle has not missed a day of school in her life and looks forward to committing herself in the same manner in her future career.
Next year Kendle plans to attend Green River Community College to earn an associates of science degree and then transfer to University of Washington to finish her undergraduate studies in microbiology. “I am thinking I want to go an extra year and get a double degree that applies microbiology to the medical field,” says Kendle. Science and math are Kendle’s favorite subjects, and she is interested in working in a medical lab, perhaps researching diseases and cures. Kendle won the Violet Richardson scholarship through Soroptimist International and has applied for over 30 other scholarships she is waiting to hear back from.
In Kendle’s spare time, she enjoys hunting, fishing and trail riding with her horse. “I love the outdoors,” remarks Kendle.
