Auburn School District Child Nutrition Services Department
Wins School Garden Grant

The Auburn School District Child Nutrition Services Department has been awarded a $1,000 Terry Husseman Sustainable Public School Award. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Olympia on May 22. 

The grant application, titled, “Our School Garden: Center for the Study of Lunch,” requested funding for an experiential garden at Washington Elementary School that incorporates and teaches students sustainable practices from vermicomposting cafeteria fruit and vegetable scraps, to growing organic fruits and vegetables for the school lunchrooms.

On May 1, from 1:30-2:30 p.m., Auburn High School students in Mr. Morris’s horticulture class will begin to prepare the garden by mulching and staking out raised beds. Washington Elementary School students will have the opportunity to participate in the after-school garden club beginning on May 6, and then every Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:15-4:00 p.m.
