1.    The student uses listening and observation skills to gain understanding.

Component 1:1   
Focuses attention.

  1. Exhibits attentiveness when listening to peers or teacher.
  2. Pays attention to oral stories, instructions, and announcements.

Component 1:2
Listens and observes to gain and interpret information.

  1. Begins to identify non-verbal communication cues such as nodding, clapping, facial expressions, and hand signals.
  2. Imitates language patterns and expression.
  3. Identifies and imitates phonetic and nature sounds.
  4. Follows simple oral directions with monitoring.

Component 1:3
Checks for understanding by asking questions and paraphrasing.

  1. Orally recalls major events or characters when listening to a story or presentation.
  2. Asks questions for personal clarification such as who, what, when, and where.

2.    The student communicates ideas clearly and effectively.

Component 2:1
Communicates clearly to a range of audiences for different purposes.

  1. Organizes and verbalizes own ideas and/or interests clearly.
  2. Recounts some major aspects of events and demonstrations when listening or watching.
  3. Demonstrates appropriate greetings to others.

Component 2:2
Develops content and ideas.

  1. Role plays alone and with others.
  2. Offers clear ideas for dictation.
  3. Dictates patterned stories in groups.
  4. Repeats directions.
  5. Participates in partner rehearsal (pair/share).

Component 2:3
Uses effective delivery.

  1. Speaks at a volume that enables others to understand.
  2. Makes eye contact with others when speaking if culturally appropriate.

Component 2:4
Uses effective language and style.

  1. Uses mature speech patterns such as complete sentences and clear phrases.
  2. Uses age-appropriate vocabulary.

Component 2:
Effectively uses action, sound, and/or images to support presentations.

  1. Uses illustrations and other art forms to represent an idea.
  2. Participates in group activities such as rhymes or songs.
  3. Shows an object and describes it to others.

3.    The student uses communication strategies and skills to work effectively with others.

Component 3:1
Uses language to interact effectively and responsibly with others.

  1. Develops conversation skills such as taking turns.
  2. Responds when asked a question.
  3. Uses compliments and praise when appropriate.

Component 3:2
Works cooperatively as a member of a group.

  1. Contributes in a group setting with ideas.
  2. Gains respect for others' feelings.

Component 3:3
Seeks agreement and solution through discussion.

  1. Generates unique ideas and gains appreciation for others' views.

4.    The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of formal and informal communication.

Component 4:1
Assesses strengths and need for improvement.

  1. Identify changes in dictation and illustrated ideas over time.

Component 4:2
Seeks and offers feedback.

  1. Responds to presentations by peers with interest, questions, and comments.
  2. Revises or adds to oral communication in response to requests for clarification or elaboration.

Analyzes mass communication.

  1. Recognizes various forms of mass communication such as magazines, television, videos, computers, and newspapers.

Component 4:4
Analyzes how communication is used in career settings.

  1. Explores telephone conversation as a way people communicate in the workplace.
  2. Adds e-mail.
  3. Written communication (notes, memos).
