Learning Requirements for |
1. The student uses listening and observation skills to gain understanding.
Component 1:1
Focuses attention.
- Exhibits attentiveness when listening to peers or teacher.
- Pays attention to oral stories, instructions, and announcements.
Component 1:2
Listens and observes to gain and interpret information.
- Begins to identify non-verbal communication cues such as nodding, clapping, facial expressions, and hand signals.
- Imitates language patterns and expression.
- Identifies and imitates phonetic and nature sounds.
- Follows simple oral directions with monitoring.
Component 1:3
Checks for understanding by asking questions and paraphrasing.
- Orally recalls major events or characters when listening to a story or presentation.
- Asks questions for personal clarification such as who, what, when, and where.
2. The student communicates ideas clearly and effectively.
Component 2:1
Communicates clearly to a range of audiences for different purposes.
- Organizes and verbalizes own ideas and/or interests clearly.
- Recounts some major aspects of events and demonstrations when listening or watching.
- Demonstrates appropriate greetings to others.
Component 2:2
Develops content and ideas.
- Role plays alone and with others.
- Offers clear ideas for dictation.
- Dictates patterned stories in groups.
- Repeats directions.
- Participates in partner rehearsal (pair/share).

Uses effective delivery.
- Speaks at a volume that enables others to understand.
- Makes eye contact with others when speaking if culturally appropriate.

Uses effective language and style.
- Uses mature speech patterns such as complete sentences and clear phrases.
- Uses age-appropriate vocabulary.

Effectively uses action, sound, and/or images to support presentations.
- Uses illustrations and other art forms to represent an idea.

- Shows an object and describes it to others.
