ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: BENCHMARKS: INTEGRATED CURRICULUM:
Students will be introduced to parts of a book:
  1. cover/dust jacket
  2. spine
  3. author
  4. illustrator

Students identify the listed parts of a book.

Standard terminology is used in the library and classroom.

FIRST GRADE

ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: BENCHMARKS: INTEGRATED CURRICULUM:
Students will review and expand upon parts of a book:
  1. cover/dust jacket
  2. spine
  3. author
  4. illustrator
  5. title
  6. title page
  7. dedication page

Students identify the listed parts of a book.

Suggested Activity:

Develop and publish individual and class books.


SECOND GRADE

ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: BENCHMARKS: INTEGRATED CURRICULUM:

  • copyright date and infringement
  • index
  1. Use the On-line Public Access Catalog (OPAC)* and conduct different types of search with assistance.

  2. select recreational materials and reference resources.
Suggested Activity:

Develop and publish individual and class books incorporating the various parts of a book.


FOURTH GRADE

ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: BENCHMARKS: INTEGRATED CURRICULUM:
  1. Students will review and expand upon parts of a book:

text, title page, table of contents, dedication page, publisher, place of publication, copyright date and infringement, index, preface, foreword, introduction, glossary, author's note, appendix, and bibliography.

  1. Create dust jackets and shelf markers.

FIFTH GRADE

ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS: BENCHMARKS: INTEGRATED CURRICULUM:
  1. Students will review and expand upon parts of a book:

Dust Jacket/Back Cover Resources

  • synopsis of story
  • biography of author/illustrator
  1. Review and expand upon OPAC* Search Station skills.

  1. Create dust jackets with a written synopsis on back for picture books.
  2. Develop and publish individual and class books incorporating the various parts of a book.
  3. Create appropriate read alouds for buddy classes.
