1.    The student writes clearly and effectively.

Component 1:1
Develops concept and design.

  1. Writes/dictates complete sentences.
  2. Writes two or more sentences that focus on a topic.
  3. Uses a simplified version of beginning, middle, and end transitions for stories.
  4. Uses adjectives to elaborate.

Component 1:2
Uses style appropriate to audience and purpose.

  1. Composes through dictation and written words, a variety of forms (letters, stories, journal entries, and narratives).

Component 1:3
Applies writing conventions.

  1. Edits for basic capitalization and periods.
  2. Uses verbs that agree with subjects in person and number.
  3. Explores personal and possessive pronouns.
  4. Creates a band of words that can be consistently spelled correctly.
  5. Uses patterns and phonemic knowledge to spell correctly three or four letter words which are found frequently in 1st grade materials.
  6. Uses phonemic awareness to approximate spelling of unknown words when drafting.

2.    The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.

  1. Dictates and/or writes stories, accounts, and descriptions for self, peers, teachers, family, and other appropriate audiences.

Writes for different purposes.

  1. Draws pictures and/or writes to label; entertain; personally communicate, formally or informally; demonstrate learning; or share learning.

Component 2:3
Writes in a variety of forms.

  1. Communicates meaning with pictures supported by words.
  2. Writes letters, narratives, journal entries, stories, and poems.

Component 2:4
Writes for career applications.

  1. Writes complete name, phone number, and address.
  2. Writes about community and family.

3.    The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.

Component 3:1
Prewrites

  1. Uses drawing, mapping, and/or listening for prewriting.
  2. Identifies and organizes ideas.

Component 3:2
Drafts

  1. Organizes ideas and puts into print.

Component 3:3
Revises

  1. Considers alternative words with teacher suggestion.
  2. Revises for meaning with help from peers.

Component 3:4
Edits

  1. Begins to incorporate standard writing conventions (grammar, capitalization, punctuation, usage, and spelling).

Publishes

  1. Chooses written or illustrated pieces for publication and sharing.

4.    The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

Component 4:1
Assesses own strengths and needs for improvement.

  1. Notes own growth in writing and sets goals for writing with teacher prompting.
  2. Begins assessing the effectiveness of personal writing using the Six Trait Writing language.

Seeks and offers feedback.

  1. Listens to the writing of peers and responds with comments or questions related to the meaning.
