Requirements for |
1. The student writes clearly and effectively.
Component 1:1
Develops concept and design.
- Writes/dictates complete sentences.
- Writes two or more sentences that focus on a topic.
- Uses a simplified version of beginning, middle, and end transitions for stories.
- Uses adjectives to elaborate.
Component 1:2
Uses style appropriate to audience and purpose.
- Composes through dictation and written words, a variety of forms (letters, stories, journal entries, and narratives).
Component 1:3
Applies writing conventions.
Component 2:1
Writes for different audiences.
- Dictates and/or writes stories, accounts, and descriptions for self, peers, teachers, family, and other appropriate audiences.
Component 2:2
Writes for different purposes.
- Draws pictures and/or writes to label; entertain; personally communicate, formally or informally; demonstrate learning; or share learning.
Component 2:3
Writes in a variety of forms.
- Communicates meaning with pictures supported by words.
- Writes letters, narratives, journal entries, stories, and poems.
Component 2:4
Writes for career applications.
- Writes complete name, phone number, and address.
- Writes about community and family.
Component 3:1
Prewrites
- Uses drawing, mapping, and/or listening for prewriting.
- Identifies and organizes ideas.
Component 3:2
Drafts
- Organizes ideas and puts into print.
Component 3:3
Revises
- Considers alternative words with teacher suggestion.
- Revises for meaning with help from peers.
Component 3:4
Edits
- Begins to incorporate standard writing conventions (grammar, capitalization, punctuation, usage, and spelling).
Component 3:5
Publishes
- Chooses written or illustrated pieces for publication and sharing.
Component 4:1
Assesses own strengths and needs for improvement.
- Notes own growth in writing and sets goals for writing with teacher prompting.
- Begins assessing the effectiveness of personal writing using the Six Trait Writing language.
Component 4:2
Seeks and offers feedback.
- Listens to the writing of peers and responds with comments or questions related to the meaning.
