Writing Essential Academic Learning
Requirements for |
1. The student writes clearly and effectively.
Component 1:1
Develops concept and design.
- Writes paragraphs using multiple sentence forms.
- Writes multiple paragraph stories.
- Writes stories with setting, characters, problem, and solution.
- Develops main ideas and support with details.
- Writes coherent paragraphs.
- Demonstrates elaboration of a topic or theme through examples, details, facts, etc...
- Uses transitional sentences and phrases to connect ideas.
Component 1:2
Uses style appropriate to audience and purpose.
- Begins to choose precise language suited to the topic and audience.
- Varies sentence lengths and structure.
- Uses figurative language and imagery.
Component 1:3
Applies writing conventions.
- Knows and applies correct spelling for grade-level words.
- Applies conventional grammar (complete sentences, subject/verb agreement, and paragraph formation).
- Applies capitalization and punctuation rules correctly (. / ! / ? / : / ; / ' / ").
- Uses legible handwriting.
2. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.
Component 2:1
Writes for different audiences.
- Understands the writer's audience (self, teachers, peers, and family) and selects the form to fit that audience.
- Begins to extend writing for distant audiences (for example; pen pals, community members, district assessment).
Component 2:2
Writes for different purposes.
- Writes for a variety of purposes (for example: to entertain, create, inform, explain ideas or procedures, direct, imagine, describe, or express him/herself).
Component 2:3
Writes in a variety of forms.
- Uses a variety of writing forms including journals, stories, poems, reports, narratives, letters, and summaries.
Component 2:4
Writes for career applications.
- Cites sources when writing reports.
- Uses word processing tools to create document.
- Writes documents that could be used in a career setting such as memos, letters, directions, and charts.
3. The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.
Component 3:1
Prewrites
- Selects and uses a strategy from the prewriting repertoire.
- Gathers information from a variety of sources.
Component 3:2
Drafts
- Writes using complete phrases, sentences, and thoughts.
- Coordinates ideas in a clear manner.
Component 3:3
Revises
- Adds or deletes information as needed.
- Uses feedback from others to improve writing.
- Revises work using the traits: Organization, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Ideas, and Voice.
Component 3:4
Edits
- Uses the Six Trait Writing guidelines to check for correct use of Conventions.
- Corrects some spelling, capitalization, and punctuation errors independently.
- Utilizes appropriate reference tools.
Component 3:5
Publishes
- Determines which pieces of writing to publish.
- Produces a legible final product.
- Selects from a variety of publishing options.
- Uses different technologies to publish a finished product.
4. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.
Component 4:1
Assesses own strengths and needs for improvement.
- Evaluates suggestions by peers and teacher to analyze writing.
- Uses Six Trait Writing to assess own writing.
- Begins to articulate the qualities that make a piece of writing effective.
Component 4:2
Seeks and offers feedback.
- Shares writing with others to gain feedback on writing.
- Listens and offers relevant feedback on others' writing using Six Trait Writing language.
