The Newbery Medal was
named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded
annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division
of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished
contribution to American literature for children. |

Reader's Choice Award |
Established in 1940 to
promote reading for enjoyment. Chosen by the children and young adults
of Alberta, Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington,
from books published 3 years previously, and nominated by librarians, teachers,
students and others. In 1991, a SeniorDivision (grades 9-12) was added

books are selected annually by children in grades K-3 in Washington State.
After children vote in March, their top favorite becomes the Washington
