NEWS RELEASE
Community Invited to Directors' Forum on
Monday, January 6 to Discuss New High School

The Auburn School District Board of Directors is inviting the community to attend a forum to discuss and answer questions about the new high school on Monday, January 6, 2003, at 7 p.m. in Washington Elementary School’s gymnasium, 20 "E" Street NE, Auburn.  The directors unanimously made the decision to put the new high school bond on the ballot based upon recommendations from two volunteer citizen committees that spent several months studying high school overcrowding in the Auburn School District.

On October 1, 2002, Auburn High School had an enrollment of 2,376 students and Auburn Riverside High School, an enrollment of 1,862 students.  Combined, the two highs schools currently have 24 portable classrooms housing students.  Auburn School District’s high school enrollment is projected to increase over 400 students by 2005.

The bond proposition would fund the construction of a new high school to be opened in 2005.  The high school would be built on 40 acres that the district already owns in the Lea Hill area.  The school’s core facility would house 1,500 students as recommended by a citizens committee and will relieve the growing overcrowding at Auburn High School and Auburn Riverside High School.

For additional information about the meeting, contact Auburn School District superintendent, Linda Cowan, at (253) 931-4914.
