NEWS RELEASE
Bond for Two Elementary Schools and a Technology Levy
will be on Tuesday, February 8 Ballot
On Monday, December 13, the Auburn School Board of Directors approved two resolutions to place educational issues on the Tuesday, February 8, 2005 ballot that will not increase local school tax rates. Resolution 1054 will submit a $32,650,00 bond to construct and equip two new elementary schools. Resolution 1055 will submit a six-year $12,000,000 Technology Levy to address the technology needs of the district.
Auburn School District worked hard to balance the impact of student growth and educational needs with the cost to local taxpayers. With the approval of the school improvement bond and technology levy, local taxpayers’ projected school tax rate will not increase.
The two new elementary schools will be located on property already owned by Auburn School District in Lakeland Hills and on Lea Hill. Significant growth continues in the Lakeland and Lea Hill areas. Two elementary schools will eliminate current overcrowding as well as accommodate future enrollment growth. The schools will serve a maximum of 600 students as recommended by the 1995 Citizens Ad Hoc Committee. The school located in Lakeland would open in 2006 and the school located on Lea Hill would open in 2007. With the opening of these two schools, it will have been fifteen years since the district opened its newest elementary school, Ilalko, in the fall of 1992.
In 1995, a Citizens Ad Hoc Committee recommended that technology be integrated into every aspect of the Auburn School District’s instructional program to improve the achievement and performance of all students. This six-year technology levy will implement this recommendation by funding the acquisition of additional technology to enhance and replace equipment including computers, printers, scanners, hubs, routers, digital switches, file servers, and other devices. It will also increase the number of classroom computers to achieve a four-to-one (4:1) student to computer ratio to further assist in student learning. Additionally, the levy will enhance teachers’ and support staff’s access to technology that assists in teaching and management of the district.
