Auburn School Board of Directors Honor
Community Member Volunteer Marilyn Valentine
On Monday, December 13, the Auburn School Board of Directors honored community volunteer, Marilyn Valentine, for her outstanding service to students and the community-at-large. Mrs. Valentine has spent years volunteering in schools in Auburn and Kent. She has been the scorekeeper for Olympic Middle School volleyball and softball teams for four years; a library volunteer for five years and a second grade classroom volunteer for seven years at Ilalko Elementary School where two of her grandchildren attended and her daughter, Kathy Price, teaches. Ryan Foster, Ilalko principal says, “Mrs. Valentine has been an outstanding, dedicated, and valuable volunteer. She is always willing to help on projects large and small.” Mrs. Valentine’s other volunteer activities include working for eight years in a Kent School District elementary school where three of her five grandchildren attended. Outside of schools, Mrs. Valentine volunteered in Campfire Girls and the PTA when her children were little; later, she served on the Wesley Homes Board of Directors. Since her retirement from teaching in 1993, she has continued to volunteer at the senior retirement community by driving a bus one to two days a week to give the senior citizens mobility. “I have always believed in volunteering,” says Mrs. Valentine. Mrs. Valentine, a Whitman College graduate, taught in Kent and Edmonds School Districts before her daughters, Mrs. Price and Patti Campbell, were born. She stayed home to care for them for ten years, excepting for teaching second grade at Washington Elementary for a year while her husband, Dr. Harold Valentine, a retired Auburn High School social studies teacher, went back to school. In 1978, Mrs. Valentine became a full-time teacher at Olympic Junior High, teaching ninth grade English. She retired after teaching fifteen years at Olympic and has been incredibly busy ever since with her wonderful volunteering.
