NEWS RELEASE
Auburn School District's Board of Directors
Honors Student Kimi Humphries

The Auburn School Board of Directors will recognize Kimi Humphries, an eighth grader at Olympic Middle School, for being an outstanding student on Monday, December 11, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.

Kimi Humphries leads by example among her classmates at Olympic Middle School. She is a bright student who according to one of her teachers, Ms. Sherin, “consistently completes all assignments, tests and projects to the best of her ability.” Kimi not only excels in the classroom, but she also helps other students succeed in the classroom. “Whenever Kimi notices a classmate stuck on a particular question or assignment, she always helps them out,” says Ms. Sherin. Kimi helps in such a way that is very unassuming. Perhaps she’ll point to a spot in the textbook where she found the answer, or she’ll show them how she came up with answer.

Kimi’s classmates respect her for her strong work ethic and consistency in completing her assignments on time—and sometimes weeks before the due date. One day in history class the students were reciting the Declaration of Independence. The assignment was to memorize it. Students were playfully teasing Kimi nearly a week and a half before the assignment was due, because they knew she had already accomplished the memorization task. “Kimi rattled off the Declaration of Independence when I asked her if she had already memorized it,” says Ms. Sherin. “And she did so in her quiet, unassuming way,” says Ms. Sherin.

Kimi’s bright smile and easygoing manner also make her a favorite with classmates and teachers alike. She is active in the school’s Cougar Crew, as well as Olympic’s gymnastics team. Kimi is one of the students selected by administrators and teachers to represent the eighth grade class on Cougar Crew, a student leadership team. The Cougar Crew works hard to promote school pride, teamwork and fair play. Through leadership, these students get together to discuss student and school issues. For instance, if there needs to be a change in behavior during assemblies, the Cougar Crew is called in to problem solve, offering solutions to the problem and then setting examples for their peers. The Cougar Crew also lends helping hands by volunteering as tour guides during open house nights. “Kimi and other Cougar Crew members are students who enjoy leading and helping others,” remarks Ms. Sherin.

Kimi’s willingness to give a 110 percent in all endeavors—as well as her drive and determination to be successful in whatever she undertakes—make her an excellent role model for others to emulate.
