Dear Students and Staff, Parents
and Friends of Auburn Schools,
Thinking back to your school days,
what comes to mind? Many of my memories flash back to hands-on
learning activities I participated in, such as making salt and flour
maps, counting rings on a tree round and role-playing Caesar’s
Commentaries of the wars in Latin class. I also fondly remember
pursuing extracurricular activities like softball, volleyball and
drama, which reinforced my classroom-based instruction.
Extracurricular programs—whether
sports, music, speech, drama, debate or another hands-on
activity—are where many young people learn lifelong lessons just as
important as those taught in the classroom. Activities are not mere
fillers of one’s time; they enrich a student’s school experience,
promoting citizenship and sportsmanship, instilling pride and
community, and also teaching lifelong lessons centering on teamwork
and self-discipline. In addition, students
today need outlets that facilitate physical, emotional and
relational development. The National Federation of |

State High School Associations (NFHS) reports the importance
and validity of interscholastic sports and fine arts through case studies that
prove when students are involved in extracurricular pursuits they make higher
grades and have better attendance (www.nfhs.org). Auburn schools ensure
all students receive these hands-on learning and extracurricular opportunities
necessary to succeed in the classroom and in their futures beyond the classroom.
Auburn School District also continues to make strides in the
classroom. Auburn schools recently adopted a new core-reading program for K-6,
selected as the best program by the state of Washington for aligning its
material with the essential learning requirements students must meet in order to
graduate. The reading series contains books for all learners (below level, on
level, advanced and ELL). Resources are available for students and parents to
access at home by visiting the publisher’s website,
www.harcourtschool.com. It is also
the prerogative of the district to achieve gains in the area of mathematics, as
well as advancements in the arts and career and technical education.
Without further ado, I would like to officially welcome you to the 2006-07
academic year. A special welcome goes out to the newest addition to Auburn
School District—Lakeland Hills Elementary School. As always, I look forward to
recognizing student and staff achievements and working alongside volunteers,
parents and families. May we all take to heart the positive effects of hands-on
learning and "learn by doing" this academic year.
Sincerely,
Linda S. Cowan, Superintendent
