Extended Learning Opportunities
for First and Second Grade Students

The Auburn School Board approved the extension of the first and second grade school day in the 2001-02 school year.  Hours of school attendance for first and second graders are the same as students in grades 3 through 5.

First and second graders in the Auburn School District had historically come to school 40-minutes later than students in grades 3 through 5.  In November 2000, citizens in the State of Washington overwhelmingly passed the student achievement Initiative 728.  Initiative 728 provides extended learning opportunities for students.  The Auburn School Board believes the extension of the first and second grade day will enhance student achievement.  Initiative 728 enabled the school district to provide this extended learning opportunity.

By extending the primary day to the same length as grades 3 through 5, the district first and second graders will spend additional time every day on reading and writing.  This extended time during first and second grade will enhance students' academic growth.  For many years, extending this time has been a goal for the Auburn School District.  The board is pleased to announce this change.
