HIT THE TARGET

Materials:
  • a calculator
  • a slate
Number of Players:

Two (2)

Directions:

Players choose a multiple of ten as a target number and record it on a slate.  Player A stores a number less than the target number into the calculator's memory.  Player B then:

  1. Uses the [M+] key to try to change the number in memory to the target number by adding a number to the number in memory.
  2. Displays the new number from memory using the [MRC] key to check to see if it is the target number.
  3. Tries again if it is not the target number, using the [M+] or [M-] key.

Player A keeps track of how many attempts it takes Player B to hit the target.

Players than trade roles to complete the round.  The player who needed fewer tries to hit the target number wins.  In case of a tie, players play another round using a new target number.

Example:

Players choose 40 as their target number.

Player A enters 12 into memory by pressing 12 [M+].

Player B:

  • Checks that 12 is in memory by pressing [MRC].
  • Adds 38 into memory by pressing 38 [M+].
  • Presses [MRC] to check the new number in memory.  (50, not the target number; so play continues)
  • Presses 10 [M-] to subtract 10 from the number in memory.
  • Presses [MRC] to check the new number in memory.  (40, the target number)

It took Player B two tries to hit the target number.

Player B presses [MRC] twice and [C] to clear everything, and enters a new number into memory.  It is then Player A's turn to try to hit the target number.
