Third Annual Auburn All-Schools Food Drive Benefits
Local Families in Need
The third annual Auburn All-Schools Food Drive came to a successful end in late January. Nearly 64,000 pounds of food and over $6,000 in donations was collected between all 21 participating schools in the initial count. The school to bring in the most food at the elementary, middle and high school levels will receive a trophy and be recognized at the Auburn Food Bank’s annual Harvest Breakfast. The winning school will be announced once the final count is in.
This year, however, one of the schools did things a bit differently. Instead of donating all of its collected canned foods and monetary gifts directly to the Auburn Food Bank, West Auburn High School felt compelled to donate food for a week from its collections to a family in the school who had lost everything in a recent fire. According to Colleen Rayburn, food drive coordinator for West Auburn High School, “It was an emergency situation and we felt we needed to help them even if we lost the contest.”
This year marks the most successful food drive yet. In the first Auburn All-Schools Food Drive 45,395 pounds of food was collected and $816 was donated to the Auburn Food Bank. Last year 68,625 pounds of food was collected and $4,804 was donated.
