Cascade Middle School Awarded Qwest Technology Grant

Cascade Middle School sixth grade math and science teacher Scott Weide was awarded a $10,000 Qwest technology grant. The grant will enable students to determine Olson Creek’s viability for salmon habitat by studying different aspects of the creek including temperature, stream flow, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity and nitrates. Using digital instruments and digital multimedia technology, all students will be able to take instantaneous accurate measurements that would require significant skill, time, and concentration using conventional techniques.

The Qwest Foundation and the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction awarded nine grants through the 2008 Qwest Foundation Teachers and Technology grants program.

The awards, announced at the Northwest Council for Computer Education Conference in Seattle on February 28, recognize K-12 public school teachers who create 21st century learning environments to engage students with real-world tools and real-life situations. Each winning individual or team received $10,000.
