RUNNING START:
COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL
The Running Start Program is authorized by the Washington State Legislature.
In this program, qualified 11th and 12th grade students attend classes
at a community or technical college to earn college and high school
credits simultaneously. The college grades/credits will be included
in the student’s
high school records and transcripts. Tuition is fully funded under the
Running Start Program. Students are responsible for purchasing books
and paying lab or miscellaneous fees, and for providing their own transportation.
In order to participate in the program, a student must be a junior or
senior.
At AHS, a student must have earned 10.5 credits by the end of the sophomore
year in order to be junior and 15.5 credits by the end of the junior
year in order to be a senior. The student must also take the COMPASS
or ASSET
exam at the college and earn college level placement scores on the assessment
in order to be eligible. After Spring Break, informational meetings will
be held for current sophomores and juniors who are interested in participating
in Running Start for the next school year during both lunches (exact
date TBD).
