Guitar

Dear Family of Cascade Guitar Students,                                    Sept. 2008

I would like to welcome your student to our guitar class at Cascade!  My name is Jim Char and I have been playing guitar professionally for 32 years.  I have been giving private and group lessons on and off for13 years.  In addition to guitar instruction, I have taught band, choir, and drama for the last 7 years.

This one semester class is intended for beginners and will cover various aspects of the guitar to get your child to the intermediate level.  For those students who already have some experience in playing, I will access where they are and add to their knowledge base.

I know that some of you may have some experience in guitar and I invite you to join us in the class perhaps to share a song, play along or help work with a small group of students.

Each student will need to keep a special three ring binder for all their music and handouts.  I encourage all students to take the folder home for practice but it needs to return to class each day as we work almost exclusively out of it.

We currently only have 17 guitars so students are strongly encouraged to provide their own guitar.  If you have one or can borrow one from a friend/relative I would be happy to check it out to make sure it’s suitable for learning on.  We will have a lockup area where private instruments may be stored.

We will learn on acoustic guitars only (guitars that don’t require an amp), either steel string acoustics or nylon string classical guitars.  Students will have opportunities to play electrics if they own one, but all class instruction will be on acoustics.

I can also assist you in finding a suitable private guitar instructor if your child wishes to pursue studying beyond the classroom.
