WELCOME
8th GRADER!
I’ve discovered throughout my years
as a teacher, and even more years as a student, that school is like a
game. In order to be successful in a
game, you must first know the rules. The
funny thing about the “school game” is that often times
teachers make up their own rules. What’s
okay in one class may not be okay in another.
I’ve written this letter to let you know how to be successful in Mr. Deaver’s Science class, so you won’t have to waste any time
trying to “figure it out.”
1.)
READ THE RULES IN YOUR PLANNER!!! I will be strictly following the school rules
as they apply to this classroom.
2.) TARDIES --- Be in the classroom before the bell rings. If you’re going to be late, get a note, otherwise you will be unexcused.
1st unexcused
tardy --- warning
2nd and 3rd --- lunch detention
4th, 5th,
& 6th ---
parent contact and after school detention
7th --- Friday night
school / parent contact
over 7 --- Friday night school / parent contact
(BE ON TIME!!!)
3.)
LANGUAGE --- Just because they say it on the Simpson’s doesn’t mean it’s
acceptable in the classroom. If you
wouldn’t say it in front of your grandmother, don’t say it here. Depending on the circumstances either a lunch
detention or after school detention will be assigned.
4.)
NO GUM
--- Cascade has adopted a new “no tolerance” policy regarding gum. Don’t chew gum at school. Cumulative violations WILL result in gum
scraping duty and Friday night school.
5.)
PASSES --- You will be given 4 emergency passes per SEMESTER (you will receive new
passes the end of January).
Use these passes for emergencies only.
Since we are situated close to the bathrooms there is a 3 minute time
limit.
6.)
LATE WORK --- All assignments must be turned in on time! Assignments that are
turned in late will be deducted 50%.
7.)
ABSENCES --- You must bring an admit slip from the attendance office on the day
following an absence. You will be given
an unexcused tardy if you come to class without one. Check the assignment board for work that you
missed. Extra copies of assignments will
be available in assignment folders. You will have as many days to finish the
work as you were absent. For example, if
you were gone 3 days, you will have 3 days to get you work turned in. You may
have to copy notes from another student.
Tests and quizzes that are missed due to an absence must be made up
outside regular class time within 10 days. Schedule a time before school, after school,
during lunch, or during SSR to make up a test or quiz.
8.)
MATERIALS --- You should have the following materials no later than Friday,
September 6th. You will need
to be bring them to class every day:
--- Science journal (spiral notebook) --- 2 red ballpoint pens
--- 2 sharpened pencils ---
Science folder or space in a 3-ring binder
--- paper ---
glue stick
--- ruler ---
2 standard blue or black ballpoint pens
--- 3-hole pencil pouch (no
gel or felt pens please)
*** I will only accept work that is
completed in pencil or standard blue or black ink. Sorry, I’m kind of picky about this.
9.) FOOD/DRINK --- Sorry, no food or drink is allowed in
class. The only exception is that you
may bring a capped water bottle (containing water only, please) to class.
The goal is to have a safe, fun, distraction free
learning environment. With the
cooperation of everyone, I’m sure we can make it happen.
If at any time you or your parents
have questions or concerns, please contact me by phone, (253) 931-4995, or by
e-mail, mdeaver@mx.auburn.wednet.edu.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mr.
Deaver
