Mr. MacDougall's 7th Grade LA Syllabus

Student expectations

  • You will come to class each day prepared to learn.
  • You will respect your classmates, your classroom and your teachers (including me).
  • You will turn your homework and class work in on time. THIS IS KEY TO A SOLID GRADE!!!
  • You will work hard.

Teacher expectations

  • I will come to class each day prepared to teach you meaningful information.
  • I will show respect to all students who are willing to give respect.
  • I will always make time to help each of you with any questions or problems you may have.
  • I will work hard.
  • I will make sure that each student in my Language Arts class will have an equal opportunity for a great education.

**Being Fair does not mean being Equal**

If we follow our classroom expectations we will have a successful and fun school year.

Curriculum

Let’s get down to business. You are in a Language Arts classroom and you will be working on a variety of skills including:

Writing

  • Reading
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary

Spelling

We have a unique opportunity this year as you will be spending each day focusing separately on writing and reading (literacy strategies).  My classes will focus on the essentials to writing including the Step Up to Writing system and the 6+1 Traits of Writing. In addition, you will be concentrating even more on grammar, spelling and vocabulary. We will also be starting a new LA curriculum called Holt.

Grading

You will be graded on a variety of different content including essays, quizzes, tests, special projects and homework. You will be informed in advance of each assignment and all assignments and homework will be posted on the website.

Each student will be given a Credit Card to be used during each semester. These cards contain 5 passes per quarter. These passes can be used for full credit on late assignments up to one day, bathrooms visits and locker visits.

As you can imagine there will be penalties for late and incomplete work. Barring special circumstances, assignments turned in late, without a pass, will earn a base grade of 50% of the assignment’s worth. If an assignment is not turned in at all it will earn a zero. This should be simple and straightforward. Please talk to me if you have any questions. Assignments not turned in by mid-quarter will become a zero.

Extra Credit
Extra credit is given out in class and as take home work. We will be discussing this during the first week of school.

Planners
Every Monday we will fill out our weekly planners. The week’s plans are always posted in the classroom and on my website. It is not mandatory to fill out planners, however, it is in your best interests to stay on top of your assignments.

Website
This year, we will be using my school website as part of our curriculum and as a tool to find assignments and extra credit. The website will be up and running at: www.auburn.wednet.edu/cascade/macweb/homepage.htm

Behavior

This year will be a little more difficult than last year. As 7th graders I will expect more out of you. It will be tough at times. However, I am hoping you will meet these challenges with a level of maturity that I think you can.

If we encounter issues I will be happy to approve some Think Time for anyone who needs it.

We are very excited to be continuing the Pyramid of Success in the school and our classrooms this year. This is a program that will help all of us be successful in school and in life. You will be learning more about the Pyramid in the coming days.

Finally, success in my class will be what you make of it. If we work hard we will see a difference. If you have any questions or concerns please come see me, my door is always open.

Thank you,
