Payday & Rent

Payday is the last Friday of each month.  On this day students will be expected to pay rent in full, and then are invited to participate in our monthly class auction.  Students will be able to deposit class money in our bank and can withdraw it to pay rent.

Students are told that in my class everyone works.  Why?  Well for one, you have to pay rent to sit at your table.  Rent for the month is $850 and will be raised during the year to a maximum of $1000.  As you have probably noticed, in our economic system, rent is more than even the highest pay!  If you can’t pay your rent at the end of the month, you’re evicted from your seat and have to sit on the floor until you can afford your rent.

How can you save enough money to afford the monthly rent?  You will earn bonus money by doing well in class, being an outstanding citizen, and working well with your partner, group, or whole class.

ALSO…you can be fined if rules are broken.  Fines are expected to be paid at the end of each day.  If you are not able to pay your fines for the week by the end of the day Thursday, you will be required to do community service during recess on Friday, no exceptions.  For every 10 minutes you work, $100 will be taken off your debt.

Below is a list of some of the bonuses and fines that you can receive.  We may add more as a class during the school year.  Some fun things to think about…purchasing condos and never paying rent again…being a landlord…monthly auctions…owning your own business!

Bonus Money

$10    Bringing back the weekly progress report signed by a parent/guardian

$20   Earning maximum polar points at a specialist

$50   Reading your own writing from the author’s chair

$50   Inviting the class to your sports games, recitals, etc.  (must be in writing, at least 1 week in advance – bring in your schedules!)

$100  Being complimented by the principal

Fines

To be determined by the class at the beginning of the school year.

Occupations

BANKER   ($600 salary per month)

·        A banker keeps records for 4-6 students in the class.  This student must be good at math and a person of the highest integrity.  The banker takes deposits and checks from their bank customers and coordinates accounts with the other bankers.  There are usually 5 or 6 bankers in class.

JANITOR ($650)

·        A janitor is given a specific area of the room to keep spotless.  The 4-5 janitors in the class will rotate cleaning responsibilities each day, which are posted in the classroom.  Janitors are the highest paid students because I want a dazzling classroom that is always clean.

INSPECTOR      ($500)

·        The inspector checks that each job is completed at the end of the day.  This person must be available to stay a couple minutes after school each day to finish inspections.

GRADER   ($575)

·        There are student graders for some assignments; spelling, vocabulary, and making words.  The work I give in these areas is objective and can be graded by any careful, fair person with an answer sheet.  For the sake of time management, having student graders frees my time to grade writing pieces, journals, projects, and other subjective pieces.  Graders take work home and grade assignments when they are due.  In addition, graders check off work turned in at the end of each day.

TECHNOLOGY MONITOR ($575)

·        The tech monitors keep our classroom computers, scanner, printers, CD player, and calculators organized, clean, and in working order.  They will also do the same in the computer lab at the end of the day.  Students will be trained appropriately and do not need prior experience with computers for this job.

RECYCLER ($500)

·        Recycling and the environment are very important in our class.  The recycler is in charge of reminding the class what items are recyclable, and taking our recycling each day to the school recycling bin.

ATTENDANCE MONITOR & MESSENGER ($550)

·        This student must have outstanding attendance.  The monitor silently takes attendance each morning, accepts notes from returning students, and takes the lunch count.  This student also handles all errands to other classrooms or the office.  This student must be able to deliver oral messages accurately and must know the school staff.  In addition, this student passes out mail.

CLERK       ($600)

·        There are usually 3 students who are my official clerks.  These students pass out and collect student work.  They also keep classroom materials organized, know where everything in the class is stored, write reminder notes for me, and collect work for missing students.

LIBRARIAN      ($600)

·        These 2 students are in charge of the class library and textbooks.  The librarians keep all books organized and neat, and coordinate our book checkout system.  In addition, students will help maintain the class AR chart.

ANIMAL SPECIALIST       ($575)

·        (Miss Kokich’s class only)  This student is in charge of the care, feeding, and cleaning of our class pet.  Because the care is different depending on the pet, daily and weekly responsibilities will vary.  This student must also be responsible for taking the class pet home over Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break.

SUPPLY MANAGER    ($500)

·        This student is in charge of our class store where students can purchase supplies.  These can include paper, pencils, erasers, and bookmarks.
