Rocket Reading
A Note from Mission Control
The purpose of the Rocket Reading Program is to
encourage children to spend time enjoying reading while away from school. Here
at Mission Control we hope you enjoy the warmth of close family time as you
supervise your child(ren)’s reading. “Supervising” may mean reading to your
child, having your child read to you, or taking turns. It may also mean being
nearby while your child reads silently, perhaps asking a few questions about
the book, magazine, or comic book your child is reading. Parents may ask
another adult—a grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, babysitter, etc.—to supervise
reading and initial the Mission Logs.
Here’s how the program works:
Ř
Students
receive a Mission Log each month at school, beginning with the October log and
ending with the April log.
Ř
Required
minimum number of minutes per day are:
§
ECE/Kindergarten 10 minutes
§
Grades 1 and 2 15 minutes
§
Grades 3, 4, and
5 20
minutes
Ř
The
supervising adult initials each day on the log the child reads for the
required number of minutes.
Ř
At
the end of the month both student and supervising adult sign the log. By
signing you are verifying that the log is filled in accurately and honestly.
Ř
Check
one box
on your log to choose your book.
Ř
Your
child should return the completed Mission Log to his or her teacher by
the due date noted at the top of the log.
Students participating in the Rocket Reading program will be rewarded for
spending their time so wisely. Rocket Readers will receive a book each month
they participate, and classrooms with at least one participating student each
month of the program will launch a rocket during Scobee Week. J A participant’s name will be
drawn to determine who will launch each class rocket. The more months you
participate, the better your chances, so read and read all year!!
