The goal of the Welcome Room Program is to shorten transition time for new students and help them feel comfortable in their new school, reduce time required for testing/assessment by teachers, specialists, and other staff members, and to give new parents needed information. Instead of assigning children to new classrooms immediately, they go to the welcome room their first 3 mornings and then visit different classrooms within their grade level for the remainder of the day. This schedule gives staff members the time and opportunity to place the student in a classroom that will best facilitate his/her needs, and allows students to be eased into their new surroundings.
Student Greeter Program
Once students have entered the classroom, they receive further assistance from Student Greeters. Each of the 1st through 5th grade classes has two students that have been trained to assist new students during their first week of class. Some of the Greeters' duties include reviewing classroom rules, expectations, and procedures.
Greeters also answer questions for the new students and often become their first new friend in class. The Student Greeter Program has been very successful and is a part of the Auburn School District's Study Skills Program.
