At Hazelwood we are commited to encouraging all students, regardless of developmental level, to participate in the social aspects of school with their same-age peers. Each of the two SLC classes are partnered with three general education classes for our "Lunch Buddy" program, which is our social mentoring program here. Lunch Buddies assist our students and socialize with them in such school activities such as lunch, recesses, assemblies, field trips, Citizen's of the Month celebrations and special activities, such as holiday music programs and art projects. Our students' academic programs are individually written and determined by the IEP (Individual Educational Program), and often includes academic integration into general education subjects and content areas as well.
Currently in the Self-Contained special education classrooms we are working on a variety of skills in reading, math, writing, social and daily living skills. Each student is working on a program tailored to meet their individual needs. By providing structured small group instruction, we are able to meet the students at their ability level and challenge each of them individually to achieve their academic goals. |
