Welcome to the 2006-2007 school year at Terminal Park Elementary (home of the Tigers!).  My name is Gary Greer and I am the Physical Education Specialist here at Terminal Park.  This is my seventh year at Terminal Park.  I am looking forward to this school year, and have many fun and exciting things planned for the students in our P.E. program.  It is my plan to publish a monthly newsletter to keep parents and students up to date on what is happening in the Physical Education program here at Terminal Park.

During P.E. classes, students can expect to participate in a variety of activities and games that will promote physical fitness, increased coordination and sports skills, cooperation and sportsmanship, and most importantly FUN!  It is my philosophy that every student is active in participation as much and as often as possible.  It is my goal to design activities that meet the needs and abilities of every student involved.  In order for this goal to be achieved, I ask your cooperation and assistance in the following matters:

1.        Make sure that your student dresses appropriately on P.E. days.  Since elementary students do not suit up like middle and high school students, it is important that your child comes to school on P.E. days dressed for active participation.  The main consideration here is that students wear rubber-soled athletic shoes.  Dress shoes, flip-flop sandals, or boots are not good shoes to wear on P.E. days.

2.        If your child is unable to participate in P.E. due to an injury or some medical reason, please send a note from home notifying me of such an instance.  If a student does not have a written excuse, I will expect that student to participate during P.E. sessions.  In the note, please explain the reason and length of time your student is to be excused from activities.

During P.E. sessions all students are expected to meet my expectations for behavior.  I like to call my expectations The Big 5:

1)       Come into the Gym quietly.

2)       Listen and Follow Directions.

3)       Show Cooperation, Respect, and Good Sportsmanship.

4)       Demonstrate Proper Use of Equipment.

5)       Line up quietly at the end of class.

Students are rewarded for meeting these expectations with a variety of rewards and incentives.  One of the incentives will be the opportunity to be selected as Terminal Park Elementary P.E. Student of the Month.  Each month, I will choose a boy and a girl from each class that I teach to be the P.E. Student of the Month.  If your child is chosen, you will see their name published in my monthly newsletter.  I also pick a “P.E. Star of the Day”, after each P.E. session.  That student gets to record Big 5 stamps for their class chart.  When a chart is completed, the class gets to select their favorite activity for an upcoming P.E session.

If a student chooses not to meet established expectations during a P.E. session, the following consequences will occur:

Step 1:   Student will be given a verbal warning.

Step 2:   Student will be given a 5 minute time-out.  (10 minutes if arguing).

Step 3:   Student will be given a time-out for the remainder of that P.E. session.

I will also be calling home to inform you of the day’s events.

Step 4:   This step is taken only for severe misbehavior.  Instances could include fighting or destruction of

P. E. equipment or property.  If a student chooses to demonstrate such behavior the following actions will occur:

(a)      Student is immediately removed from that P.E. session.

(b)     A call home to parents is made.

(c)      Student will not be allowed to attend the following P.E. session.

                                                                                (see next page please)

Once again, I would like to emphasize the positive, but these consequences will be adhered to in the case of a student choosing not to meet expectations which have been established for the Physical Education program at Terminal Park Elementary.

For your convenience and reference, I have included a copy of the P.E. schedule with this newsletter.  Please take a moment to review the schedule below, so that you know which days your student participates in Physical Education.  Thank you, and I look forward to working with your child as the year progresses.  If you have any questions, I can be contacted at Terminal Park Elementary.  The phone number is: (253) 931-4978.

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                Gary Greer
