What
is school wide Title One?
Title One is a federally funded program.
Traditionally, students who were served by Title One were selected based
on their initial scores on reading tests given in the fall.
The students showing the most need would be invited to receive extra help
in reading.
Terminal Park is a school wide Title One school. The Title One staff goes
to each classroom and assists the classroom teacher with the reading curriculum.
In most classrooms, students are placed in flexible groupings that
circulate through various teacher led centers.
Teachers modify the lessons up or down, depending on the group.
A group of students needing extra attention on a skill can receive that
help right in the class. Likewise, students who benefits from enrichment can also have
those needs met. Skills being
taught to students include:

The HARP home reading program is run through the Title One department.
The program begins in October and runs through May. Students keep track of the number of minutes they read at
home and record them on a piece of paper. The
paper is returned to school and students receive certificates showing the number
of minutes read up to date. Special
awards are given throughout the program, such as principal certificates,
restaurant coupons, and invitations to pizza luncheons.
The three students with the most number of minutes by the end of May will
receive a trophy. My goal this year is to have students read over 500,000
minutes!

Read Across America is an event celebrated each year.
March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
We celebrate his contribution to reading by coming together to read on
a fun-filled evening. Music,
theatrical performances, book readings, and cake are all enjoyed on this special
night.
