Welcome to Fifth Grade

This year offers many experiences that are unique and special to 5th grade only. Here are some to look forward to during the 2006-2007 school year. More information regarding these events will be sent home as they approach.

*DARE - This is a weekly class that teaches students important skills and information regarding safety, drug abuse, and violence. It is taught by an Auburn Police Officer. Once students complete the course and write an essay there will be a formal graduation ceremony for you to attend.

*Camp Auburn - Students receive important outdoor education such as survival skills, building safe shelters and campfires, and safe boating procedures. It is a wonderful experience at Lake Retreat Baptist Camp in Ravensdale during the springtime. Fund raising opportunities will be available to assist with the cost of camp as spring approaches.

*Basketball - This is a fun optional experience for all 5th graders. There will be a boys team and a girls team, and a season that consists of several practices and 6 games against other elementary schools.

*Junior Olympics - Students compete in track and field events with other schools in the district at Auburn Memorial Stadium in June.

*Science/Social Studies- Along with integrating our academics to meet the individual needs of the students our 5th grade program has a unique opportunity in the Social Studies/Science area. We flip classes for these two subjects and Mr. Markwell teaches Social Studies to both 5th grade classes and Ms. Hagen teaches Science. This allows each teacher to teach the same lesson to both groups and get a little more creative. This has proven to be an enjoyable success for students and teachers both.

*Volleyball-A mixed boys and girls team where players learn the game during practices and ends the season with a jamboree at Auburn High School.

*A 5th grade musical which is usually held in the Spring. It is a combination of hard work that happens through out the school year with our outstanding music teacher, Mrs. Pogue.
