NEWS RELEASE
Dick Scobee Elementary to Host Memorial and Rededication Assembly
on Friday, January 25, 2002

Dick Scobee Elementary will be hosting a memorial and rededication assembly at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 25, to mark the fourteenth anniversary of the tragic death of Commander Dick Scobee in the ill-fated Space Challenger.  Commander Scobee was renown for his goal setting and hard-work.  The assembly will also commemorate his memory.  Dick Scobee attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from Auburn High School.  He joined the Air Force after high school and eventually was selected as an astronaut in the United States space program.  As an astronaut, Commander Dick Scobee often spoke to students and he stressed the importance of never giving up.  He said that if individuals were persistent and determined enough, they would succeed.  Each day as they enter school, Dick Scobee Elementary students pass a sign that says “Only as far as we dream can we go.”  These words set the challenge and inspiration for these students.

The local King Solomon #60 Masonic Lodge will be presenting has a Space Shuttle float to the school at the assembly.  Commander Scobee’s brother, Jim Scobee, will be in attendance at the assembly.
