District's Post-Secondary Night Offers Students and Parents
Options for Life After High School
Auburn School District will be hosting its seventh annual Post-Secondary Night on Monday, February 4, at 7 – 9 p.m. at Auburn Riverside High School. “Today’s preparation determines tomorrow’s achievement” is the premise for the evening with a focus on providing students and parents comprehensive information about post secondary options such as college, military, and job training. Parents and students from all district high schools are being encouraged to attend this event. The evening will begin with a short presentation in the Auburn Riverside main gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. Students and parents are then invited to attend break-out sessions to learn more about: four-year public colleges; four-year private colleges; two-year community colleges; two-year technical colleges; college athletics and NCAA eligibility; transition resources for special needs students; college credit in high school; apprenticeships and Tech Prep; and financial aid. Program presenters will include Jim Rawlins, Assistant Director of Recruitment, University of Washington; Melanie Reed, Associate Director of Admissions, University of Puget Sound; Deborah Hughes, High School Outreach Coordinator, Green River Community College; Debbie Rundle, Renton Technical College; Bobbie Jackson, Apprenticeship Opportunities Project; Susie Shields and Jennifer Thornton, South King County Tech Prep Consortium; as well as counselors and staff from all three Auburn District high schools. In addition, thirty-six colleges, technical schools and career schools will have representatives and information available in the Beyond High School Fair throughout the evening. The Fair will also include information about military options including ROTC and academies, apprenticeship and mentorship programs, and volunteer opportunities. Post-Secondary Night will provide valuable information for students as they begin to make plans for “life after high school.”
