NEWS RELEASE
Memorial Assembly at Dick Scobee Elementary
Friday, January 31

Dick Scobee Elementary will be hosting a memorial assembly at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, January 31 to mark the seventeenth anniversary of the tragic death of Commander Dick Scobee in the ill-fated Space Challenger.  Commander Scobee was renown for his goal setting and hard-work.  The assembly will commemorate his memory.  Dick Scobee attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from Auburn High School.  He joined the Air Force after high school and eventually was selected as an astronaut in the United States space program.  As an astronaut, Commander Dick Scobee often spoke to students and he stressed the importance of never giving up.  He said that if individuals were persistent and determined enough, they would succeed.  Each day as they enter school, Dick Scobee Elementary students pass a sign that quotes Commander Scobee, “Only as far as we dream can we go.”  These words set the challenge and inspiration for the students.  Commander Scobee’s brother will speak at the assembly.
