NEWS RELEASE
Auburn School Board of Directors Recognize
Program Specialist Brian Tinsley

On Monday, December 12, the Auburn School Board of Directors recognized Brian Tinsley, program specialist, for his excellent service to students with special needs. Born and raised in Lynnwood Washington, Mr. Tinsley attended Lynnwood High School. He began working with students while in high school in the class, Careers with Children. “I quickly discovered though that I enjoyed the class and working with kids was something I was good at.” Mr. Tinsley continued to work with kids as a camp director and later as a para-educator in a special education classroom. He earned his bachelors degree in special education from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington and is currently pursuing his administrative credentials at the University of Washington. After he graduated from college, Mr. Tinsley worked as a structured learning center teacher at Trask Middle School in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Mr. Tinsley is an incredibly understanding and motivating educator for several reasons. “I struggled throughout my years in public education. Eventually, I dropped out of high school and moved to live with my grandparents in North Carolina. They were not satisfied to let me believe that I could not be successful in school and enrolled me in an adult high school program. With their guidance I learned that I could experience success in school and I went on to the local community college and then the University of North Carolina,” said Mr. Tinsley. Mr. Tinsley is very committed to working with students with special needs. “It is my desire to impact all students, but I hope I am able to reach some who, like me, experience little success in school and believe they can not accomplish great things. I want to give to those students what my family gave to me--the chance to experience success.” Mr. Tinsley continues, “The best parts of my job are the opportunities I have had to advocate and support students and families. I am committed to making sure that we do all we can to provide a quality education to students with special needs in the Auburn School District. Working previously as a transition specialist and now as a program specialist has afforded me many opportunities to grow and develop skills both inside and outside of the classroom.” Jennifer Traufler, executive director of student support services, lauds Mr. Tinsley. “Mr. Tinsley does amazing work every day for students and staff. He has an awesome gift for connecting with people and has focused a great deal of his time on supporting new staff. He is a very involved educator and is very committed to the education of students. He is an outstanding and dedicated educator!”
