Auburn School Honor
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The nation will honor Civil Rights leader, Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr., on Monday, January 16. Auburn schools are commemorating
Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday with various activities:
- Gildo Rey Elementary School held an assembly on Monday,
January 9.
- Evergreen Heights Elementary School held an assembly on
Friday, January 13.
- Isaiah Johnson, Mt. Baker Middle School assistant
principal, is speaking at Ilalko Elementary School on Tuesday, January 17 at
2:40 p.m.
- Hazelwood Elementary School is having individual
classrooms recognize the work and efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during
classroom studies. A portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. completed by
Mrs. Wright's class is a highlight.
- Lake View Elementary School will be having an assembly
on January 17.
- Lea Hill Elementary School third graders will be
performing in an original Dr. Martin Luther King production that music
teacher, Sarah Samuelson, has written and is directing an evening performance
on Tuesday, January 17 at 7 p.m. for families. The production will be
the school's Bully Prevention Kick-off week, January 17-20. There will
be two school assemblies on Friday, January 20, at 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.
- At Pioneer Elementary School, the school librarian, Mr.
Hoskin, dedicates a week of library classes to educate students about the life
and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
- Terminal Park used the closed circuit TV system to
broadcast dedicated message about Dr. King on Friday, January 13.
- Washington Elementary School held an all-school
assembly on Friday, January 6. The highlight of the program was when
several fifth grade students read Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a
Dream speech. Students in every grade will be doing classroom-based
projects and activities before the holiday.
- Mt. Baker Middle School had a 45-minute assembly on
Monday, January 9, that included a slide show tribute to Dr. King, and
performances by the Mt. Baker choir, orchestra, and band. A student
leader shared portions of Dr. King's speech and a staff member gave a
chronological report on Dr. King's life and accomplishments.
- On Tuesday, January 10, Cascade Middle School students
in Literacy classes were involved in an activity that students segregation and
special grouping of individuals.
- On Friday, January 20, an all-school assembly will be
held at Olympic Middle School in which students will be presenting
biographical information on Dr. King, presenting a poem recitation with a
visual display, as well as music and choral recitation of I Have a Dream.
- Rainier Middle School will have an assembly that will
present a multi-media commemoration of Dr. King's life. Also, sixth
grade students will develop a school hallway to commemorate Dr. King and
another hallway entitled, It's My Life, will commemorate others who
have also overcome obstacles such as Rosa Parks.
- Auburn High School will focus on encouraging students
to have a Day On, not a day off, as The King Center requests. There was
a Martin Luther King, Jr., assembly on Friday, January 13. The assembly
included a memorial to Rosa Parks, a Latino youth band, a video, a slide show,
and a skit, including a chronology of Dr. King's life.
- Auburn Mountainview High School held an assembly on
Friday, January 13.
