NEWS RELEASE
Auburn School District Transportation Department Participates
in Voluntary Pollution Control Program

On January 17, Auburn School District was congratulated by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency for completing the voluntary Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and Washington State School Bus Retrofit Program.

Auburn School District is one of the earliest participants in the retrofit program, a program designed to reduce bus exhaust emissions. In 2004, Auburn School District installed 72 diesel oxidation catalysts, which reduced its fleet’s fine particle pollution and other pollutants by approximately 25 percent. In 2006, 64 crankcase filters were installed, which reduced the pollutants even more. Additionally, since the district began using the new required ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel last fall, the fleet has now reduced its fine particle pollution and other pollutants by 50 percent.

The program is designed to reduce diesel exhaust and provide clean-air benefits to the community and the children riding school buses to and from school.
