District ELL Statement
The Auburn School District recognizes the special needs of students who are learning English Language Learners (ELL). Students receive services at their neighborhood school. Para-educators and classroom teachers design language experiences which facilitate the acquisition of English at the elementary level. Secondary level students may study English in a separate class designed for second language learners. Tutoring assistance in academic areas is also available.
Lake View ELL Statement
Here at Lake View Elementary we serve a small population of students from other countries who speak a language other than English in the home. A certified teacher oversees the program, providing lessons and support materials. We share this teacher with Chinook Elementary and Cascade Middle School. A half timePara-Educator implements the lessons and works directly with the students. The certified teacher also administers tests such as informal assessments, the WLPT (Washington Language Proficiency Test) and the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning) when needed. Students receive instruction in vocabulary, speaking and listening skills, and literacy skills. Classroom support is also provided.
Scheduling
Students are scheduled into small groups for ELL instruction based on skill level and grade level. The groups meet for 30 minutes of instruction 3 to 5 days a week depending on need. We see students at times that do not interfere with PE, music, library, or other specialists. We also work around special events so that the students may experience all Lake View has to offer.
Class Expectations
Students are expected to arrive in a timely manner, prepared to work, and with a good attitude. Pencils and other materials are provided for them. Our students enjoy their time with us so we do not want disruptions in the groups.
