Terminal Park Selected as March
Reading School of the Month
On Tuesday, March 26, Terminal Park Elementary School had a special visit from Governor Gary Locke and Terry Bergeson, superintendent of public instruction. The occasion for the visit will be the governor’s presentation of the Reading School of the Month (March) to Terminal Park. This reading recognition program was started by the governor to honor schools that have shown outstanding progress in reading achievement. The program will continue throughout the year 2002. Terminal Park Elementary and the other schools chosen for the honor share the characteristic of a high percentage of their students reaching standards in the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in reading for the last two years. Terminal Park has had 80-90% of their students reach the reading standard the last two years.
Terminal Park’s Elementary students and staff will host the governor and state superintendent with the following activities: ASB officers will provide a tour of the school; teachers, para-educators and students will hold a roundtable discussion about reading; and Governor Locke and Superintendent Bergeson will present the reading award and the Auburn School Board of Directors will make a presentation at an all-school assembly. Governor Locke will also read a short story at the assembly to emphasize the focus of the special award – reading.
