On Friday, February 28, and Monday, March 3, schools in Auburn School District participated in the national celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Read Across America. (Dr. Seuss’ birthday is actually on March 2 which was Sunday.) Auburn schools celebrated reading with many creative activities: On Monday, March 3, Hazelwood Elementary School had each student exchange up to three books at a school-wide book exchange to occur during the school day. The school had accepted donations of additional books to ensure that every child was able to go home with at least one good quality used children’s book. Additionally, students were encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character and were able to purchase green eggs and ham for lunch. On Monday, March 3, Washington Elementary School had students come to school dressed as their favorite book character or author. Students in third through fifth grade wrote a short description of whom they came as. The school had two ALL CALL, DROP EVERYTHING AND READ, 20-minute breaks in the day. So if they were in PE, music, or library they stopped and read no matter what was happening. Guest readers were invited to read to students. The class with the most participation would receive a set of books for their classroom. |

“Drop Everything & Read” for 10-minutes approximately every hour.
Students & staff were encouraged to dress as their favorite storybook character or in red and white.
Cat hats and buttons were sold as a fundraiser for K-1 field trips.
Every classroom was encouraged to decorate their door in a reading theme.
Morning assembly with at least three teacher skits. Each grade level was responsible for reciting a three or four line reading chant sometime during the assembly. The assembly was led by “The Cat in the Hat."
Contest to see which classroom brought the most Dr. Seuss books from home or public library. Each student that brought a book got one Book Buck in a drawing. Prizes were drawn at an afternoon assembly and will be a basket of CD’s from Radio Disney. Each teacher will keep track of the total number of books brought by his/her students. The classroom who brought the most books will get an extra recess, supervised by “The Cat in the Hat." Mrs. Frey and her 3rd grade students collected and tabulated the results.

On Friday, February 28, Pioneer Elementary had City of Auburn Mayor, Pete Lewis, reading to two classes. Miss Auburn, Rachel Reynolds, also read to students.
