Lake View Team Wins Regional South King County
Library Systems Global Reading Challenge
On Tuesday, March 15, a team of fourth graders from Lake View Elementary School won the regional South King County Library Systems Global Reading Challenge held at their school. Two teams from Enumclaw School District and one team from Lea Hill Elementary School competed as well. The Lake View students will now compete at the county-level competition on Friday, April 1.
Jan Millgard, Lake View Elementary School librarian, was responsible for organizing the initial Lake View reading event and was the coach for the team that represented their school at the regional event.
This reading challenge event encourages reading in the elementary grades. In the late 1930s, its predecessor, the Battle of the Books, was a weekly radio show that used a quiz bowl format to test children’s knowledge of good literature. Questions about characters, plots, and settings were answered by teams representing several elementary schools.
