NEWS RELEASE
Hazelwood Second Annual Egg Drop
to be held Friday, March 25

In preparation for the first human landing on the moon in the 60’s, NASA scientists were involved in developing a space capsule that could withstand the tremendous forces of a lunar landing. Through numerous calculations they found that the terminal velocity (top falling speed) was about that of an object dropped off their laboratory roof. The NASA scientists used eggs instead of real astronauts to test their space capsule design.

To duplicate these scientific experimentation methods as well as have some springtime fun, Hazelwood Elementary School will be having its second Annual Egg Drop on Friday, March 25 at 1:45 p.m. outside the school’s gymnasium. All second graders have been busily designing a “space capsule” that will cushion a raw egg enough to prevent breakage when the egg is dropped from the roof of the gym. Eggs must be from a chicken; they must be raw; and they must not be chemically altered. After the drop, all entries will be opened to determine egg-o-naut survival. Students having eggs with intact shells will receive a prize and all students will receive a certificate for participating.
