Auburn Mountainview Large Mixed
Ensemble Headed to State

The newly opened Auburn Mountainview High School is sending its large mixed ensemble—the first music ensemble of any kind from Auburn Mountainview—to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association/Washington Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Ellensburg, Washington, on Friday, April 28.

Ensemble members include: Sara Mellado, Kailen Best, Katie Farrell, Lauren Frerichs, Jamie Ritson, Jessica Kion, Daniel Frerichs, and James Manuel. The ensemble performed “The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee” by Jean Berger, “an incredibly difficult contest piece to learn and perform,” according to Karen Frerichs, Auburn Mountainview’s Fine Arts Choral Director. “Yet the students practiced it as often as possible, and I knew they were capable of keeping perfect intonation.”

This state-renowned competition highlights Washington’s finest high school music students, featuring 22 regions. Winners in each category from the 22 regional contests move on to the state competition, where first, second, and third place awards are selected.

Categories in the small and large ensemble contest include: woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, women’s vocal, men’s vocal, and mixed vocal. Solo categories include: seven woodwind, five brass, four percussion, four strings, six vocal, piano, guitar, and harp.
