Lake View Elementary Awarded Reading Grant
Lake View Elementary School was recently awarded a $4,000 grant from Boeing Employees’ Credit Union. The funds will be used to purchase classroom listening centers where small groups of students can gather and listen to books on tape.
Lake View’s dedicated staff is committed to reaching its goal of ensuring every student leaves the school as a fluent, comprehending reader. To meet this goal, the staff provides each student with high-quality, individualized instruction and materials. One element of a comprehensive reading program is to provide classrooms with listening centers. Typically, a small group of students who are at a similar reading level listen to the book together. After finishing the story, the group works together on assignments that help them understand story elements such as characters, vocabulary and plot. A listening center is comprised of a media player, a distribution box and headphones.
Now each Lake View classroom will be equipped with a listening center. The centers will allow a group of students to do valuable work while giving the teacher an opportunity to work with individuals or small groups. Mike Weibel, principal of Lake View Elementary, is excited about the new listening centers and the benefits it will bring to the students of Lake View, “The centers will allow us to teach students at their learning level even better, in as small a group as possible.”
