NEWS RELEASE
Auburn School District to Host
"Whole Local Foods Day"

On Wednesday, March 19, the Auburn School District Child Nutrition Services department will be offering a “Whole Local Foods Day” in the school kitchens.

In conjunction with the March 19 statewide “Taste Washington Day” event, Auburn’s “Whole Local Foods Day” will serve lunch to students featuring whole, natural foods from local farmers.

Teachers will talk with students about whole foods and encourage them to recognize and understand some of the benefits of eating whole foods—like extra vitamins and minerals to help them grow—as well as the impacts of eating whole foods such as boosting the local economy, conserving energy and sustainability!

Whole Foods are foods that are eaten in a state similar to how they exist in nature—they undergo little processing. They might be chopped up and combined (like in a salad). Typically, they are foods that you can see grow (have you ever seen a “chip” grow?).

The student lunch menu on March 19 includes:

Roast Chicken Quarters
Draper Valley Farms, Mount Vernon, WA
with Kosher Salt and Black Pepper

Organic Yukon Gold Potatoes
Full Circle Farms, Carnation, WA

Fresh D’Anjou Pear
Congdon Orchards, Yakima, WA

Certified Organic Fresh Baked Foccacia
Essential Bakery, Seattle, WA

1% White or Non-Fat Chocolate Milk
Dairy Fresh Farms, Seattle, WA

Homemade Washington Cherry Crisp
Royal Ridge Fruit Company, Royal, WA
